The Challenge

Living Streets is the national not-for-profit charity that stands up for pedestrians. They are a dedicated group of professionals and volunteers, working together to create safe, attractive, enjoyable streets around the UK.

Travel Tracker is a new web-based tool using the class interactive whiteboard, to make the Government supported initiative of ‘Walk Once a Week’ (WOW) a bigger, bolder and more interactive experience than ever before.

A digital alternative to wall-charts, Travel Tracker forms a complete monitoring and rewards system that encourages children to consider taking more active trips to school. A fun interactive tool for Primary classrooms to record how pupils travel to school and due to the engaging interface, results provide better, more accurate data for schools and local authorities to view real-time data to inform legislation and government initiatives; true 'big data'.

Local authorities are able to gauge school travel within their area over time, allowing them to identify which schools need more help with promoting active travel to school and identifying heavy motorised travel.

Given that the latest Chief Medical Officer’s report stated that reducing obesity by just one percentage point among children and young people could lead to saving £1 billion each year as children would be less likely to end up with long-term health problems needing NHS treatment, this is investment that needs to be robustly measured.

Results

Electronic implementation = 'big data’ analysis on health and wellbeing of the next generation.

Vital collation of targeted data, helps Local Authorities to tackle obesity amongst children.

Signups with schools have doubled

More and more schools start to use the online tool as part of the walk once a week campaign (WoW)

Travel Tracker recently logged the (first!) millionth active journey, within 6 months of launch and it is thanks to the 350+ WoW schools across England and Wales, plus their local authorities, who took the digital leap to follow each pupil’s journey through time.
